The year was 1927. Charles Lindbergh made the first transatlantic flight, covering nearly a thousand miles from New York to Paris in 33 hours. And it was then that the FURLA story began in Italy. Aldo Furlanetto founded FURLA in 1927, starting out by selling hair ornaments and leather accessories. Little did he know then that FURLA would become one of the most popular brands worldwide.
In 1955, Furlanetto opened his first store on Via Ugo Bassi, in the heart of Bologna. Initially, it featured items Furlanetto had collected during his travels through Italy, Germany, and Slovakia. Stylish jewelry sat alongside bags and leather accessories crafted in the finest Italian ateliers.
In the 1970s, the company's reins were passed to Aldo's children: Giovanna, Carlo, and Paolo Furlanetto. Giovanna worked with their father on bag designs, while Carlo and Paolo focused primarily on business organization and brand strategy. In the early 1970s, the company began producing its own products, bags, and accessories bearing its logo. A significant strategic shift arose from the need to adapt to a new society. Women became strong, independent, and fashion-conscious.
The collections grew alongside the company. As the 1980s approached, FURLA accessories became must-haves. FURLA bags are characterized by high quality, clean lines, and functionality. Boutiques opened in Bologna, Rome, and Paris, followed by a store on Madison Avenue in New York. A large retail network was established in 64 countries, from Japan to the United States.
Starting with four stores, FURLA now boasts over 300 boutiques on the world's most fashionable streets and over 1,000 retail stores and sales outlets in major shopping malls such as Bloomingdales in New York and Selfridges in London. The brand has achieved this success by upholding the great traditions of Italian craftsmanship, which remain the most important consideration when making any decision.
